Borrisoleigh (Tipperary)

Share This:

My 2 x great grandfather John Hogan and his seven older siblings attended this school from around the late 1830s to early 1850s. The family emigrated to Tasmania, Australia in 1856.  One of the Tasmanian descendants researched the family in the 1990s and visited the Coolderry and Kilcroe/Kilcroo areas where the family were recorded as living on different records.  She was fortunate to discover the building still standing then and took this photograph.

I'm confused at the exact location of the building as a map search has Coolderry in Offaly which borders Tipperary. The Hogan children's baptisms were listed in the Cashel and Emly Diocese while their father was recorded in Griffiths Valuations as farming in Ballymackey, Tipperary.

More detail on the family is with the profile of John's mother Hannah Breen, in the Tipperary Ancestor Chronicles.

  • As luck would have it  I was walking yesterday  and noted the old Coolderry School mentioned above.

That school is actualy located in the heart of Tipperary

It is located a few KMs from Borrisoleigh   close to the sandtrap

Sometimes in Ireland you get similar place names in different counties.  Unfortunately google has not recorded this old school as existing.

But it does exist and is on the road  directly  south of sandtrap, borrisoleigh

  • Thank you, it’s amazing the building is still standing, it didn’t look in great condition in the 1990’s photo. What state is it now please?

I’ll try to locate it on Google Earth with the detail you’ve provided.
