This is fascinating! This is my grandmother's family.
This Houghton / Haughton / Howton family were at varying times members of the Presbyterian Church at Carrigallen, the Episcopalian Protestant Church, and Newtown Gore Church of Ireland.
In 1815, the Newtowngore Tenement Maps record this family just south of Newtown Gore at Clonbuyher (Cloonboygher):
-
George Houghton with 22 and half Irish acres at #7 (GV#6) and an additional acre at #31 (GV#3)
-
John Houghton with 25 and half at #22 (GV #12)
-
William Houghton (1781-c.1864) at #39 (GV#8) and #35 (GV#9) in partnership with John Irwin (just north of Cloonboygher lough)
The combined Houghton holding would amount to 123 statute acres in today's measurements. Their landlord was the Earl of Leitrim.
In 1834, the Tithe Applotment Records for Clonboyher record only two brothers, who In 1841, also appear in the Ordnance Survey House books;
-
William Houghton with 53 Irish acres; had a house, 3 out-buildings and sundries rated in total at £5.
-
George Houghton with 23 and a half Irish acres. had a house and 1 out-building rated in total at £5.
In 1846, George Houghton is recorded as the father in the marriage of William Haughton of Carrigallen & Rebecca Sherar of Mohill. (Rebecca Shera Houghton died in 1857).
