Michael and his family were sent to Canada in 1848 under forced emigration from the Irvilloughter Estate. There were 8 children in this family of Henry and Catherine Gerrity Dempsey. They only remained in Canada a short time and made their way via Vermont to Pittston, PA. There were a total of 3 large Dempsey families evicted with them.

Henry Dempsey and Catherine Gerrity are of my lineage. My mother Elizabeth Mitchell (Markham), was the daughter of Eileen Dempsey. Eileen was the daughter of John Dempsey, who was Henry and Catherine's son. Michael Dempsey was John Dempsey's brother.

Rebecca, I thought we had previously corresponded and now, having looked back over my tree, we have. Previously you mentioned John Dempsey. Actually John Dempsey was my gr-grandfather Michael Dempsey's brother. John's son, John Vincent Dempsey m Julia Trew. Their dau Eileen Julia m George Mitchell and their dau, Elizabeth Mitchell m Randy Markham I believe you are their daughter. I guess what I'm saying is that the John, brother of Michael Dempsey is a generation back from the one to whom you refer, making our common ancester another generation back from where you have been thinking.

Linda, I too have been working on the Dempsey-Gherrity line for about 50 years and got nowhere further until your contact today. Actually Catherine Gerrity only emerged within the last two years when I found her daughter's death certificate naming her and Henry Dempsey as her parents. Like the Gerritys, the Dempseys walked from Canada with a short term residency in Vermont, they continued on to Pittston, where several of the men became coal miners.
