Edward O'Neill was born in Garvaghullion in a place called Derryhooagh to James O'Neill and Mary O'Kane.  Edward immigrate to the United States about 1834 to study for the priesthood at St. Mary's in Emmittsburg, Maryland.  He was ordained by Bishop Hughes, also from County Tyrone, on 18 October 1840.  He was a professor at St. John's College, Fordham, in 1842-43.  He was named pastor of Nativity Church in New York City and held that charge from 1844-1847.

Father Edward O'Neill was interred in the vaults in Old St. Patrick's Cathedral on Mott Street in New York City.
