My great aunt, Nellie Conmy, was born in Kilglass Parish in/near Rathmacurkey, Culleens, Sligo in May 1879. Her parents, Martin and Mary (nee Conmy) Conmy emigrated with their 3 small children John [5], Mary Elizabeth [3], and Nellie [1] in 1880. They ended up in Olyphant, Pennsylvania, a small mining town that was part of Scranton. Nellie was a nurse in the Scranton area, and traveled to Queens, NY in Feb. 1919 to assist at a hospital there. She had been in NY for one week when she contracted the Spanish Flu and died.
My thoughts went to her immediately when I heard about the COVID-19 pandemic. I pray for those who are on the frontlines in "our" pandemic, for like my great-aunt, they are making a huge sacrifice to care for others in a very dangerous situation.
