Peter Boyle was born in Carlingford. As a child he moved with his family to Coatbridge in Scotland. His father Thomas Boyle and older brothers found work in the local Iron Works. The Iron Works which employed many Irish workers supplied material to the Glasgow shipbuilders. For a brief time Peter also worked in the Iron Works but soon found his metier as footballer.
He played professionally in Scotland and England, and he earned five caps for representing Ireland in international play.
In 1912 he was appointed player manager of York City, but left and in 1913 became player/coach of the Brodsworth Colliery FC. Brodsworth Main near Doncaster, Yorkshire. He was associated with the Brodsworth Colliery for the rest of his life. An article in the Sheffield Daily Telegraph of 8 September 1919 reported Peter accepting a post as manager and coach to the Abbevile (Mons.) Football Team (Second Division of the Southern League and of the Welsh League) but nothing further is known of this.
His obituary states that during WW1 he served in France, Egypt and Mesopotamia. Whether he was in Mesopotamia is not documented. What remains of his service record and plus his medals suggest he enlisted in the York and Lancaster Regiment. Overseas he served first in Gallipoli in the Army Service Corps. Then when it was formed in the Labour Corps possibly in 732 Company in France.
He suffered from what now would be probably diagnosed as PTSD and in June 1918 was discharged as 'no longer physically fit for War Service.’
