Michael Doherty was born in Limerick City on or about 1827. He immigrated to the United States in 1851 with his wife Honora (Malone) and his children Julia and John; John died either enroute or shortly afterward. They settled in New York City, then moved to Tuckahoe, NY, where Michael worked as a stone cutter. When they left Ireland, they left their son Francis behind - I don't know why, but Michael's mother resisted Michael's efforts to have his son sent to the U.S. Michael and Honora had three more daugters - Mary Anne, Anne and Honora. Michael enlisted in the US Army in 1862 and died at the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863. Michael is my great-great-grandfather.
