My Ancestor George May, settled in the foothills of May Mountain, in the area of Brocks Gap, Rockingham co. Virginia USA around 1881 He may have been before in the Shennadoah Valley and in Pennsylvania. A few of his children mention he was born in Ireland. Myself and other descendants have taken the DNA test, and points to Ireland and other May families we match, also have Irish roots. (the people of Brocks Gap, were mainly German) he married Martha Madeline Houghman or Huffman.
Other May families we DNA match. John May of Crawford, Pennsylvania b. circa 1750. who claims to be from Ireland. William May b. Ca. 1766 m Elizabeth Blackmoore 1796 in Taunton, Somerset, England, (listed as born in Ireland in the ship manifesto) Settled in Beaver co. Pensylvania. James May ca. 1790 in Jones co, Georgia. Robert May, son John was born in Ireland and grandson born in Rhodesia in 1916. And we also match Frederick Wilkinson family from Londonberry.
He is mistaken for a German May family of Leonthard May, but our DNA does not match with their descendants. Because the people of Brocks Gap were mainly German and the son George of Leonthard May lived near a Huffman family in Shenandoah. That is why Find a grave has a Johann George May. But no actual mention of him in any record, has Johann.
