The O'Shaughnessy Stone
The O'Shaughnessy Stone

The O'Shaughnessys came to prominence in South Galway in the twelfth century.  Their main strongholds were the castles of Gort, Fiddane and Ardamullivane.

Sir Roger O'Shaughnessy went to the Battle of the Boyne but died soon afterwards. His son, William, lost all the O'Shaughnessy lands in the Inquisition of 5th September, 1696. The lands were granted to Sir Thomas Prendergast, whose family were the ancestors of the Lords Gort.

The O'Shaughnessy Society  is open to all related to this ancient Irish sept.  It is registered with Finte na hEireann - the Clans of Ireland - and meets bi-annually. The next meeting takes place 20-23 May 2021 at The Lady Gregory Hotel, Gort.
