Patrick F Boyle was born in the Townland of Maas on 12 Dec 1872. He was the son of Patrick Boyle (b c 1841) and Elizabeth McGrath and the grandson of Bryan Boyle (b c 1800). There were 39 households in the 1833 Tithe Applotment record for the townland of Maas, seven of those were occupied by Boyles including one for this Bryan Boyle. The earliest record for inhabitants of Maas appears to be the 1659 "Census of Ireland" which was thought to have been some type of Pole tax accounting. This record is believed to have listed the number of people 15 years or older, however not by name unless they were "Tituladoes Names" (people of some signifiance) and it also stated if they were Irish, English or Scotts. In the Parish of Inishkeel (including Maas, in the present day Parish of Glenties) there were three titled people mentioned including a "Teague O'Boyle" who was the resident claiment of Maas. Also noted in this record for Maas were, "4 people, 4 Irish". A later "Teague O'Boyle" appears in the Registry of Deeds, Dublin, dated 27 January 1737, "Teague O'Boyle, farmer of Irishtown in the manor of Maas, for 31 years, the two ballyboes of the 1/2 quarter of Maas from November last". One other significant record of note before the 1833 Tithe Applotment was the 1829 abolition of the "Forty Shilling franchise" which was the qualification for voting privilege, afterwards those who were "Ten Pound Freeholders" were then eligible for voting privileges. Bryan Boyle of Maas was one of the five applicants from the Barony of Boylagh who applied for this when he registered on 3 June 1829 at the Quater Sessions at Lifford.
Hope this information is helpful for other Boyle families who are searching Maas, Glenties ancestors as it is likely most of those families shared a kinship.
