In 1965, Leitrim author John McGahern's second book 'The Dark' was banned by the Irish Board of Censorship. 

The reason given was that the piece was pornographic in nature, a judgement which McGahern disagreed with. 

Not only was his reputation affected, but he also lost his teaching job.
