Back to List

John Smith (1864-1949) was born in Co. Letrim, the only son of Patrick and Catherine (Gookin) Smith. It seems that Patrick went to England to find work; family lore has it that he was killed in a mining accident. After his death, Kate took John and his three sisters first to England and then to Massachusetts, USA. John found work in the shoeworking industry and again, family lore states that he was pulled out of retirement during WWII to make boots for officers, because he was one of the few who could make quality boots by hand. He and his wife, whom he met in Massachusetts, had ten children, of whom one is my grandfather. Johh, his wife and nine of their ten children are all buried in St. James Catholic Cemetery in Whitman, Massachusetts.
