Sarah Lacy was born c.1846, in Goorteenamona, the eldest of seven children born to James Lacy and Mary Ryan.
On 23 February 1868 Sarah married John Dwyer of Clone, (b. abt 1842) in the Clonoulty Church. The witnesses were Daniel Ryan and Margaret Ryan.
They would have eight children namely Catherine (b.December 1868 d.April 1869), Mary (b. 1870), Margaret (b.1871), Patrick (b. 1872), John (b.1873 d.bef.1881), James (b.1875), William (b.1878) and John Mark (b.1881).
Sarah died 19th July 1882 in the infirmary of the Cashel Workhouse. The Indoor Register for Cashel Workhouse 1882, held today by the Tipperary County Council has the following entry in respect of her death:
"Sarah Dwyer, aged 36, married and a housekeeper, cleanly clad with a residence of Clonoulty West, Ballagh was admitted to Cashel Workhouse on 30/1/1882 and discharged on 22/2/1882. She was re- admitted on 12/7/1882 and died in the workhouse on 19/7/1882."
Although there’s a possibility Sarah was subsequently buried in the ancestral Ballintemple Cemetery, Dundrum the sad truth is that in all likelihood Sarah was buried adjacent to the fever wards in one of the unmarked burial pits within the grounds of the workhouse itself.
