  • I live near lombardstown and the neighbouring farm was originally owned by a Haines. It is in the townland of Gortmore and the name lives on as a steep hill on the roadside beside the farm is still known as Haines's hill.It appears that Haines owned substantial property in Gortmore and when the railway arrived a stone arched bridge was built for the family for access and  this was known as Haines's Bridge.Unfortunately this bridge was demolished by Iarnrod Eireann  to get the cut stone to extend the station platfotm in  Millstreet for the Eurovision Song Contest in 1993. Haines's house is still standing  and photo enclosed if I can get it uploaded

  • Thank you Donie, very interesting.

Also an interesting aside about the desruction of the bridge, too sad how things are demolished so reaqdily. I live in Sydney and we have a very short European history of course but still are constantly fighting to retain the few early colonial buildings.

I found this reference to Charles and family on the following site if you or anyone is interested. Gortmore is mentioned. Coming from Australia I find owning a couple of hundred acres to be a small area but I know of course the land in Ireland is far more productive than a lot of our land here.

Doing my family history has been a journey, my Irish ancestors include a famine orphan from Galway, a female convict from Kerry, a member of the East India Co from Mayo as well as my Haines/Roche/McCarthy family from Cork. I did visit Mallow some years ago but didn'y know much about the Haines family at the time, hopefully I will get back and have a look at some of the lovely villages etc.

Your photo didn't get attached, have another go? I'd love to see it.

    Best wishes from down under

    Description

In his will made in 1825 Charles Haines of Mallow, county Cork, mentions his sons Thomas, Humphrey, Charles and Homan and a number of daughters. In 1837 Lewis refers to the "extensive boulting mills of Messrs Haines and Smith" in the parish of Ballyclogh. At the time of Griffith's Valuation Charles Haynes held land in the parish of Kilshannig, barony of Duhallow, county Cork. In July 1854 Clyda House and part of the lands of Gurtmore Upper, barony of Duhallow, were advertised for sale. Clyda House was held under a lease dated 19 July 1814 Charles Haines to his son Thomas. By the 1870s Charles Haines and Charles C. Haines both of Mallow, owned 277 and 215 acres respectively in county Cork. http://www.igp-web.com/IGPArchives/ire/cork/wills/haines9gwl.txt

  • Read the will attached and noted references to Gortmore,Vicount Lismore was one of the O Callaghans of Clonmeen who married into powerful Butler family from Kilkenny and became a Vicount. The O Callaghans owned 45,000 acres along the River Blackwater valley including Gortmore but lost much of it after Cromwell's conquest of Ireland but got back some. The Gortmore property is beside the river and the house is about 100yards from it..I cannot see a button to upload the house photo.E mail your e mail address to donieosul@gmail.com and I will send that photo.

I notice a name Nason in  the  will and there is a headstone in Newberry Graveyard near Mallow to a Nason family, most uncommn name and interesting headstone, may be a relation.

In Castlemagner Graveyard are two Haines headstones and I was involved in both graveyards in photographing and recording the inscriptions and all of this information is available on the website "historicgraves.com". Explore,Projects, page 2,Duhallow project, Castlemagner and you can schroll to  each grave there.

    regards
