Anthony Sutton was born either in Dublin or the vicinity of Glasnamullen Townland in 1803 to Henry (c1770 - c1850, originally from Glasnamullen?) and Patty Sutton who were married at "Round Church" St. Andrew Street, Dublin a Church of Ireland Parish in August 1795.There were 11 children. The following information was written down by Henry Sutton, son of William (below) before he left for Australia in 1852. (The information in italics is mine):

1.         Mary 11 Sept 1796-

2.         George 4 Apr 1798- died before 1861 likely before 1808

3.         John 4 Feb 1800- 25 Feb 1857 m Eleanor Evans 20 May 1830 (witnessed by George Sutton & Benjamin Evans) emigrated to Swan River Colony Australia in 1839 with family.

                        Son Henry Liton b. 1832 d. 6 Feb 1861

                        Daughter Patricia died as infant

Since John’s two children did not live to inherit the farm, his nephew Henry Sutton (b. 1836 son of William, below) moved to Australia in 1862 to help John’s wife. Henry eventually took over his uncle’s farm.

4.         Betty 25 Aug 1801- died before 1861 likely before 1812

5.         Anthony 08 Jan 1803- emigrated to Upper Canada before 1837. He lived in Southwold Township Elgin County Upper Canada

6.         William b. 05 Apr 1804, d. 17 Aug 1875 Rathdrum   Glasnamullen, Annamoe, County Wicklow, Ireland or St. Kevin’s, Rathdrum, County Wicklow - m 1 Ellen Doyle 13 Feb 1835, (son Henry b 23 Apr 1836 emigrated to Australia) – m 2 Ellen Farran 30 Nov 1850 (witnessed by James Bullock & Thomas R Shore - her father was a lime burner, John Farran)

Son Henry Sutton b. 23 Apr 1836 moved to Australia in 1862 to help Aunt Eleanor. Henry eventually took over his uncle’s farm and created homestead of own called Leighton House.

7.         Sally 24 Sept 1806-

8.         George 22 May1808- I have a theory that George married Margaret (?) of County Wicklow but died about 1855. A Margaret Sutton from Wicklow is found on the Canada 1871 Census living at the home of Anthony Sutton. She is documented to be an aunt to Anthony's children.

9.         Patty 12 Jun 1810-

10.       Betty 17 Jan 1812- married twice

11.       Anne 18 Oct 1813-

Two children must have died young, because the names were used for later children. Of all the children, I can trace only three – John, who emigrated to Australia, Anthony who left for Canada, and William who moved to Wicklow, the next county south of Dublin.

Anthony emigrated to Southwold Township, Elgin County, Upper Canada sometime before 1837. He may even have gone there as early as 1818 when Suttons from Wicklow emigrated to that county. He married Betsey Gilbert in 1837. They farmed on Lot 37 "Back Street" Southwold Township and they had 9 children.

More information available about his later life.

  • Thank you for placing this information here. It has opened up a whole new line of inquiry for me. It has also proved true. I am a descendant of Anthony Sutton living in Australia. I now allows me to explain a recent DNA match with a Sutton cousin in Perth, Australia. This cousin is a descendant of Anthony's brother William whose son Henry emigrated to Perth (Swan River Colony). Can I ask what did Henry write the above information in/on before arriving in Australia? Do you still have whatever it was?

  • Hello Sutton Aussie.
The account by Henry was written in his journal as he was leaving for Australia. It is in the possession of a descendant in western Australia.
Are you descended from the Anthony Sutton who emigrated to Canada? If so, then we must be related. How did you/your family end up in Australia? I am in the process of getting my DNA done so maybe you will pop up in my DNA results. I'm looking forward to hearing more from you because I don't have absolute proof that my Anthony is the Anthony in the account other than the Leighton name.

  • Hello Sandy,

Thank you for your response! Yes I am a descendant of Anthony Sutton who emigrated to Canada. Anthony's son Zacchaeus is my gg grandfather. Zacchaeus had a son John Donald Sutton who married an english woman Alice Rumble in Canada 1921. John and Alice emigrated to New Zealand in the 1920's as Alice's parents were living there. They had two boys George and John (Jack). John and Alice split up and John returned to Canada with 2 year old baby Jack. Alice and little George remained in New Zealand. George is my grandfather. I was born in New Zealand but moved to Australia when I was a child. I have had my DNA analysied through Ancestry so if you are using them then yes you should pop up as a cousin. My surname is Wilson my mother was a Sutton and her married name now is Johnston. My mother will also pop up as a DNA match as she has had hers done also. I only recently discovered the DNA match with the Perth Sutton when I saw the public linked family tree they have next to their name. The descendant is linked to George Sutton who married Violet Cooper. This George Sutton is the son of Henry and Jane (nee McLarty) Sutton. The very same Henry who came to Australia (son of William Sutton). How are you related to Anthony Sutton? Looking forward to hearing from you. Cheers.

  • Oh my goodness. I am so excited to know that you are descended from the Canadian Anthony AND DNA compatible with the western Australia Suttons. That proves to me that I am correct in my research that I have found Anthony's family.

I am descended from Anthony through his daughter Frances who married Anthony Samuel Waite. I have photographs of her and a couple of other siblings. She was my mother's great-grandmother. I would like to send you my biography of Anthony and his descendants. Would you mind sending me your email address?

    So glad you contacted me

  • Hello Sandra,

Yes it looks as if your research has paid off! I have since gone through my DNA matches again and have found another link to the Perth Sutton's. A descendant of William's through a son called John born 1859 to William and his second wife Ellen Farran is also a match with me. All very amazing isnt it. I wish we had this kind of science at our finger tips years ago, it would have saved me a lot of time and effort!

I would like to correspond with you further however I am reluctant to put my email address up for everyone to see. Is there another way I can contact you? Otherwise once you get your DNA result, if it is Ancestry you are using, you will be able to send me a private message on there. I also have a tree attached so you should be able to work out who I am. I will look out for you there too. I would love to read Anthony's biography. Sounds great!

  • Hi Rochelle

A quick question. Where does the descendant who contacted you of William Sutton through his son John Sutton live. Just curious.

  • It has now been confirmed by DNA that Anthony Sutton was the son of Henry and Patty Sutton (above). Though Anthony's brother John and a couple of nephews emigrated to Australia, Anthony emigrated to Canada before 1837.

Anthony's second son was Henry Leighton Sutton. The middle name Leighton is common among the Australian Suttons and also was given to one of Anthony's nephews who remained in Ireland, son of his brother William Sutton. There is a possibility that Leighton was the maiden name of Anthony's mother, Patty.
