Henry METCALF was born in County Wicklow, Ireland about 1835. He was the son of Peter and Elizabeth "Bess" METCALF. Henry's father was a miner in a copper mine at Ballymurtagh, near Avoca, County Wicklow, Ireland.

Henry's mother and at least one sister died in 1847 according to the family Bible.

By 1850 some members of the Metcalf family had emigrated to the USA and were living in New Diggings, Lafayette County, Wisconsin, USA where they were miners. Henry was living in the household of his older brother, Edward Metcalf [Sr.] at the time of the 1850 US census.

Henry's father, Peter Metcalf [Sr.], and brother, Peter Metcalf, [Jr.] died of cholera in the summer of 1850 in New Diggings.

On January 21, 1856, Henry Metcalf [Metcaff] married Ann Caffrey in Ontonagon County, Michigan, USA.

By 1860 Henry Metcalf was living at Council Hill, Jo Daviess County, Illinois, USA with his wife Ann and their two children, Elizabeth, 3, and Henry, 1.

By 1870 Henry had moved to Montana where he was living with other miners at Silver City, Lewis and Clark County, Montana, USA where he worked as a Quartz miner. Later his wife and children joined him in Montana.

Henry and Ann Metcalf had the following known children:

Elizabeth Metcalf,  b. 1858

Henry Metcalf, b. 1864

Sarah Metcalf, b.1866

William Metcalf, b. 1871

Henry Metcalf died on November 2, 1871, in Unionville, Montana according to the Helena Daily Herald, Helena, Montana, November 3, 1871. 

The newspaper reported: 

"Died Henry Metcalf, a miner employed in the Columbia Mine, died at Unionville last night.  Deceased left a large family and many friends to morn his loss."  

On November 4, 1871, he was buried in the Old Catholic Cemetery. Later his remains were moved to the Old Saint Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Helena, Lewis and Clark County, Montana.

The record of interments notes that he had had a "long sickness" and that he was "converted on his death bed."
