Mr. Michael Garvey was born on September 19 [or 29], 1827, at Kilke/Kilkee, County Clare, Ireland, "near the mouth of the Shannon River." He emigrated to the USA where he settled in Davenport, Scott County, Iowa and worked on the Railroad as a flagman. On August 20, 1860, at Davenport, Iowa he married Bridget Devine, who was also born in County Clare, Ireland.
In August of 1860 the couple moved to Geneseo, Iowa where Mr. Garvey worked in the stockyards. Mr. and Mrs.Garvey had several children including:
Mrs. Mary (Garvey) Conmee
Mrs. ____(Garvey) Liebel
Mrs. ____(Garvey) Brown
Mr. Thomas Garvey
The family later moved back to Davenport, Iowa.
A newspaper reporter interviewing Mr. Garvey in the early 1900s noted that although Mr. Garvey appreciated the scenery around Davenport, Iowa he was nostalgic for Ireland. He said: "Nothing compares in nature equal to the old dales of Killarney, the picturesque beauty of Kilkan [Kilkee?] and the richness of Clare."
Michael Garvey died on June 1, 1912, and was buried at Holy Family Cemetery, Davenport, Scott County, Iowa. His wife, Bridget died on March 11, 1914, and is also buried at Holy Family.
