Stayed in Ireland

I am looking for both parents of Martha McCracken. I do not know anything about her, except her birth year (1792), and information about her husband. She was married to Joseph Sloss (1782, Londonderry - 24 November 1865, Londonderry?). In 1831, Joseph lived in Artrea, County Derry. I am related to her through her son, Robert Sloss. I do not know her date of death.

Additional Information
Date of Birth 1st Jan 1792
Date of Death 24th Nov 1865

  • There was a Robert, son of Joseph of Ballymulderg baptised at the Magherafelt Church of Ireland on Jan 2, 1816.  Is he your ancestor?

  • Yes, Robert and Joseph are both my ancestors, from Ballymulderg.

Both their surnames are Sloss; Robert Sloss & Joseph Sloss.
I looked into Griffith's Valuation, but I felt confused and stuck (because I assumed there would be parents' names attached or any personal information I could use to figure out my other Sloss ancestors from Magherafelt).

So, I left the Valuation records alone.

Joseph Sloss was the husband of Martha McCracken.
And yes, their son Robert was baptized in 1816, originating from Ballymulderg.

  • Griffiths Valuation is from the 1850's.  What you want to look at are Church recordsm estate records etc.  Please contact me at ronaldjdale@netscape.net and I will share what I found on the Sloss and McCracken families in the church records.  For example, we know that the Sloss ancestors must have been among the earliest planters to this part of Derry, arriving from Scotland shortly after 1691.  John Sloss baptised daughter Martha at the Castledawson Presbyterian Church on Dec 16, 1705.  John Sloss was living in Tullylinkisay at the time.  In the 1766 Religious census we find three Sloss households,   Joseph in Lisnamorrow and James Sloss and James Sloss junior in Magherafelt civil parish--likely in Tullylinkisay.  It must have been later that one of them or their sons moved to Ballymulderg .
