Johanna married John Honahan (Onahan in the U.S.) in Leighlinbridge (probably), had a son William James Onahan in 1836, a daughter Mary in 1843; the family moved to Liverpool where daughter Ann was born in 1846 or 1847. Johanna died of cholera in Liverpool c1849. Her husband and children sailed to America, landed in New York on 17 March 1851. They moved to and lived in Chicago, Illinois. John Onahan died in 1859, William James married and had one daughter. Mary and Ann Onahan both became nuns with the Sisters of the Sacred Heart. 

Johanna and John's son, William James Onahan, married Margaret Gertrude Duffy in Chicago, and went on to become a prominent and prosperous member of the community and a Catholic leader. Their only surviving child, Mary Josephine, married Daniel V. Gallery in Chicago in 1898, and they had six children who survived infancy. Three of the boys (Daniel V., Jr, William Onahan, and Philip Daly Gallery) became decorated career naval officers who fought in WWII and Korea. The fourth son, John Ireland Gallery, was ordained a priest and also served as naval chaplain during WWII. Marcia died in her teens, Margaret married and raised children.

  • I lived in Chicago Illinois.  Our local elementary school was named after William J. Onahan.

    I found an article about him in an obscure publication.
