I am looking for any information I can find about Hannah McDonald, my third great grandmother, born in 1820 in Rathdowney, County Laois, Ireland. Hannah was transported to Australia as a convict in 1837, having been convicted for the offence of stealing clothes, along with her mother, my 4th great grandmother, Alicia (or perhaps Alice?) Carter.
I am looking for any information on Hannah, Alicia or Hannah's half-brother, David, who was also transported to Australia as a convict in 1834. I am curious to know more about the circumstances surrounding the crime, the trial, the subsequent transportation or anything at all really!
Thanking you all in advance for anything you can share.

Further to previous post, record of Hannah being moved to Dublin. I have not found any record of a "David McDonald" being transported in 1834.
Who was Hannah and David's father and his occupation. What was the religion of the family?

Thank you so much! This is terrific infromation!
Her brother David is actually her half-brother. His surname was Carter, not Mcdonald. I hope this helps. Please let me know if you find anything on Alicia Carter (McDonald), Hannah's mother. She was convicted on the same day as her daughter for the same offence.
Are you able to say what "Committed by" means? Hannah's an Alicia's record which you have posted seems to show that they were "committed by" a Thomas Moyse Esq (?). Would he have been a police officer? Or the person they may have stolen from?
Thanks in advance for anythign further you might find!! Much appreciated.

I don't have any information on David Carter's father or his occupation and my searches are not turning up anything at all......I am struggling to find any information on Alicia (or Alice) Carter / McDonald as well. The father of Hannah McDonald appears to be an Edward McDonald born in 1800 but I am not sure how reliable that record is....
I am fairly sure the religion of the famioly would have Catholic although I can't say for sure.

Hi Marylou,
I have not found any record of a conviction of David Carter in Queen's County (Maryborough Town). If you go to the conviction sheet for Hannah and Alicia, you will see a conviction of a Stephen King - No. 339 - for assaulting a David Carter and Eliza Carter in 1836.
There is a David Carter convicted in Tipperary in 1834 and transported on the ship Parmelia, arriving March 1st 1834. There is an entry for Prospect on October 1st 1834. Another David Carter - transported in 1833.
No marriage record found for Alicia McDonald.
Committed means "sent to the prison or other place", usually by the Resident Magistrate or another Magistrate acting for him.
Best Wishes,

Hi Marylou
Attached further records on David Carter.
Please ignore - David Carter - to Australia in 1833.
I have checked for a birth record for David Carter with negative results.
Best Wishes,
