Migrated to/Born in Australia
About Margaret McConville
Margaret was my Great Grandmother. She died at Home Hill, Queensland, Australia 30 March 1943. Official source: https://www.qld.gov.au/law/births-deaths-marriages-and-divorces
Her death certificate says her age was 83 years 8 months 16 days which makes her year of birth 1860.
Her burial rites were conducted by the Church of England. But in small Australian country towns people often accepted other denominations conducting such ceremonies.
No immigration papers had been found showing her entry into Australia: the type of immigrant she was, place of departure and entry, occupation and who she might have travelled with.
Margaret had nine children. The first one, Ellen, was born in 1885 and the last one, Bernard, was born 1903.
Margaret married John Weakley in 1884 but no official record has been found for the marriage.
My mother, her grand-daughter, said that Margaret had worked in a woollen mill from age 6. She is said to have made very intricate and beautiful lace.
Margaret was illiterate.
Each birth certificate for her nine children required that the mother’s birthplace be stated. The form was usually completed by Margaret’s husband, John Weakley – “the informant”. Various places have been nominated and the handwriting is very ornate and there is a lack of certainty between “C” and “G”.
