9 County Laois (Queens) Irish orphan girls came to Australia on the "Maria" arriving Sydney in 1850.  Honor (Ann/Annie) Fitzpatrick was born April 1834 Grantstown, County Queens to Martin Fitzpatrick and Margaret Burns.  Both parents were dead when Honor came to Australia in 1850.  I am looking to find which workhouse she would have come from before boarding the ship "Maria".  The other girls on that voyage of the irish orphan girls were all from the Roscrea workhouse.  Appreciate any help thankyou.

    Have you looked at https://laoislocalstudies.ie/board-of-guardians-minute-books/?

    It mentions the following:

Laois Local Studies holds copies of the surviving minute books for MountmellickAbbeyleix and Donaghmore Poor Law Unions. It should be noted that union boundaries did not follow county lines and at times many Laois people were part of Poor Law Unions based in other counties, such as Athy (Ballyadams, Dysertenos, Killabin, Stradbally, Moyanna & Tullamoy), Roscrea (Borris-in-Ossory, Rathdowney, Donaghmore, Eirke & Kyle) and Carlow (Arles, Graigue & Shrule).

The AbbeyLeix and Mountmellick on-line records don't cover 1850. If you know when the parents died you could search for her admission it might get a mention.

The Roscrea minute book is at http://www.tippstudiesdigital.ie/files/original/40/1986/Roscrea%20PLU%2…

    I hope this helps

    Cheers Kevin

  • Hi,

Ther is a possibility that Honor Fitzpatrick may have been an inmate of Donaghmore workhouse. Donaghmore is about ten miles from Roscrea, and is in Co. Laois. The townland of Grantstown is listed as being part of the catchment area for Donaghmore workhouse. Donaghmore was built to relieve overcrowding at Roscrea and opened in 1850, which is the reason I say possibility, because you say she arrived in Australia in 1850. Unfortunately, no admission or discharge lists exiist for Donaghmore, therefore we cannot be certain if she was an inmate of that institution.

    Regards,

    Paddy.

  • thank you very kind for getting back to me Paddy and Kevin.  Honor arrived in late June 1850, departing Plymouth on 7 March 1850.  Just before Donaghmore workhouse opened unfortunately.  Does anyone know if the Roscrea and Queens county orphan girls on this ship "Maria" left from Dublin or Cobh to go to Plymouth in February 1850 at all? Thanks all.
