When Barney Kerley was born in 1825 in Ireland, Athlone and Drum, Roscommon, Ireland, his father, Thomae, was 30 and his mother, Honoriae, was 30. Barney immigrated to the United States on 31 Mar 1849 at the age of 24. That was the height of the Irish Famine. He enlisted in the Union Army on September 16, 1861, in New York City. He was to serve three years. He mustered in as private, Co. F, of the 66th New York Regiment on November 4, 1861. He was discharged for disability, November 13, 1862, at Fort McHenry, Md. It is possible that he was badly wounded at the Battle of Antietam. After the war, he had two sons and seven daughters with Johanna Shine. He settled near Ballston Spa, Saratoga County, New York, where he farmed. He died in 1899 in Ballston Spa, New York, at the age of 74 and was buried there.
