Before Martin died he told his 1 year old daughter, Ellen, that her hair was black as coal. In 1873 Martin, a Protestant, married Mary Cussen, a Catholic. Both of their parents/families disinherited them, which probably added to Martin/Mary's financial/social challenges. For a time Martin/Mary lived in the Rathkeale Workhouse, which is were their daughter, Ellen Josephine, was born. A year later Martin was living in the Limerick Workhouse, were he died on August 4, 1884 under the incorrect last name of Stoker.
