Elizabeth Jane Henderson according to her Marriage Certificate issued in Victoria, Australia she was born in Ballybrennan, Sligo, Ireland. Parents listed as William Henderson and Annie Kelly.
She married Samuel Joseph Chinn, a farmer who says he was born in London, England. Civil ceremony that happened at a private home. Married according to Methodist rites but that doesn't mean Elizabeth was Methodist. From what I have read from other researchers and newspapers her husband seems to have been a very dominating character.
Have another researcher (here in Australia) who has Elizabeth with nickname of Lynn and her family believed she is sister to Robert Henderson who married in Sligo just prior to migrating to Victoria with wife and sister listed with him aboard that ship. (check out Saxby/delbridge tree on Ancestry for her information). The family believe Richard and Elizabeth born in Scotland just to put the cat among the pidgeons.
We would both love to clarify the mystery of Elizabeth Jane Henderson's birthplace.
Ships record for them has all three stating Sligo Ireland to be their Native country. Elizabeth's marriage certificate has place in detail while her death certificate also states she was from Sligo, Ireland and parents match those on her marriage certificate.
I am also aware if family originated in Scotland then moved to Ireland, even Island hopping between the two over time that there may be multiple families sharing same surname, first names etc due to culturally sticking to the Scottish naming system.
Indeed the ancestor that links me to Elizabeth Jane Chinn nee Henderson is my great-grandmother also Elizabeth Jane Chinn though noted as Eliza in places and my mum told me she was known as Jenny or Jinny by family. Irony is not lost on me that she MY Eliza Jane married a Scotsman Donald McDonald whose ancestors hailed from North Uist in West Hebrides and Isle of Skye.
However the naming system can't help trace further down my line and across for Anna Jean McDonald was the only child my Eliza Jane and Donald McDonald had. May have had others who died and simply buried on land where they lived but none were registered with authorities as births or deaths, only Anna.
Anyone able to check records for baptisms I would appreciate it. I have been to http://sligo.rootsireland.ie/quis.php?page=0&prevStartQuery=0 to check who might have had land there but no William do I see only Alexander.
So I wonder if the children Robert and Eliza merely grew up in Ballybrennan so my Eliza presumed she was also born there. I know that happens even today.
Parents may have died before she ever needed to know the truth.
Any help would be appreciated. Even being told no church records have baptism records is still worth knowing.
Perhaps there is a baptism and it notes child was born in Scotland and even may be that baptism was after they were old enough to choose their own faith to follow.
It may be that we two researchers here in Australia are climbing totally different trees. If evidence says my girl was born in Sligo but no sign of brother then I will know Ireland was right for me for now.
Many a person came to this Great Southern Land using new names and creating fictitious famiies to give credence to their identity and allow them a better status in life once here. Many were unaware their parents had already done same thing for the exactly same reason or only too aware family were already here, in ball and chains as it were. They wished to disassociate from them at least initially till they understood how the social system worked here. They would learn it was very different to the lands they had just come from.
My thanks for any help. Please feel free to request the same from me. I have been doing research since the 1980s with my family spread throughout Australia and beyond.
