When aged about 20, on 25.03.1831, convicted of theft, 7 years transportation to Australia, aboard the Asia V, departed Cork 06.08.1831, arrived Port Jackson (Sydney) 02.12.1831. Description: domestic servant, single, Catholic, neither read/write, complexion ruddy & freckled, brown hair, blue eyes.
He was only known as Maurice once in Australia, however his family have his only forename as James on some BDM docs, so I've assumed perhaps James to be his formal/first name. His family name was written variously as Haley,Haly, Hayley, Healey or Healy.
Maurice partnered with (didn't marry) Sarah Burton who came to Australia from Oxford England in about 1850. They had eight children: Patrick Thomas, Maurice jnr, John, Sarah, Rebecca Caroline, Mary Jane, James & Eliza. It appears only two of the children married: Rebecca Caroline (later Summerell) and Mary Jane (later Smith).
The family was based at Bungarby Station in New South Wales, about 200km south of Canberra and Maurice worked as a shepherd on various runs in that district. On 23.01.1879 he purchased his own property, 640 acres, at Corrowong about 30km SW of Bungarby. Unfortunately he died there shortly afterwards on 09.05.1879. His partner Sarah (now known as Sarah Hayley) died at Delegate NSW on 17.12.1907.
