My Great grandfather was born in Bridgetown, Skibbereen in 1836. His name was Jerry or Jeremiah Driscoll. His parents were Timothy Driscoll and Mary Driscoll (farmers from Poundlick townland, near Skibbereen). There were many children in the family, but it seems that quite a number died in childhood. The children that I can't locate are
1 Billing - born 1835,
2 Julia and Bess -born 1837,
3 Mary -born 1842
4 Jane -born 1847
5 Timothy born 1850.
All these children were born in Skibbereen, baptised at St Patrick's Cathedral Skibbereen, but have virtually disappeared from my view.
Children that I have found are
1 Jerry born 1836 Jerry is my great grandfather. He married in 1868, Catherine Carey from Castlehaven and had a child Timothy born in High Street, Skibbereen in 1868. These three sailed to Western Australia in 1869.
2 Catherine born 1839. Catherine was a spinster, living at Chapel Lane, appearing in the 1901 census with his mother Mary (Driscoll) Driscoll (see above) and brother Patrick (see notes for him further on).
3 Johannah Driscoll born 1844 or 1845. Johannah left Ireland in 1866 and sailed to Western Australia and lived near Jeremiah (see above) in Western Australia. Johannah married James McClymand in Western Australia.
4 Michael Driscoll born 1852 Michael was sentenced to prisoner in Cork City. he moved there after incerceration. He married Mary Thompson in 1877 at St Finbarr's Church in South Cork City, had many children and died in 1906 in Cork City.
5 Patrick Driscoll born 1855. Patrick worked in a mill, a grain mill possibly, in Skibbereen. He appeared in the 1901 with his mother (above) and sister Catherine (above). He is buried in the Tullagh Cemetery near Baltimore in 1914.
Mary (Driscoll) Driscoll married Timothy Driscoll, probably in the Rath Church, Tullagh around about 18343/4. Mary as I said earlier in this email, lived in Chapel Lane, Skibbereen very close to the Police Building at the base of the hill in Chapel Lane. She must have lived there once her husband Timothy died (around 1881) and thereafter. She lived with Catherine, her spinster daughter and Patrick, her bachelor son.
The family are said to have come from Lough Hyne. It is notable that Patrick was buried in the Tullagh Cemetery when he died in Skibbereen in 1914. It would not be surprising if Catherine was buried there also. Catherine died in 1909 in Skibbereen.
Is there any information that you can give me on any of the people mentioned in this email, be it descendants or ancestors? Any information on any relatives in Skibbereen would be exciting.
