Borne in Southwest Cork circa 1840 | Emigrated to England 1870s living in London per 1871 census | Married Miss Mary Ann Emily Phinbow 07 Jul 1879 St. James the Great Bethnal Green, London | Lived in Notting Hill, London England; per 1911 and 1921 Census England and Wales; John lived with his youngest daughter Annie Elizabeth Murphy (nee Sullivan) and her husband Mr. Edward Murphy in Notting Hill.

Annie Elizabeth Murphy nee Sullivan is my maternal great Grandmother, Nanny Murphy. Another daughter Mrs. Mary Ann Geary (nee Sullivan) living in Notting Hill too.

Both 1911 & 1921 Census UK say John is a Widower borne in Cork, Ireland 1840. On his marriage banns, it states his father as John Sullivan as well. I believe he may have had a son named John Sullivan as well as the above two daughters, another daughter Margaret Sullivan.

DNA results all say South West Cork and Munster. All baptisms of the children and his marriage do not have a middle name for my Great Great Grandfather John Sullivan. Looking for his birthplace and hopefully both his parents names as well.

Without John"s Parents names and particularly hid mothers maiden name, there is very little hope of finding his correct family. In ireishgenealogy.ie if you put in the name of John Sullivan in the Diocese of Cork & Ross for year span 1830 - 1850, you will get 4482 baptisms and 1060 marriages with the name of John Sullivan.. Sorry for being so pessimistic but In County Cork Sullivan is one of the most prolific families. As stated, his mothers maiden name is your only hope.

I have three suggestions---one is consider the Irish naming patterns to see if it gives you a hint as to his parent's names---I was able to locate my great-grandparents using the naming patterns.

The second suggestion is test DNA---which it appears you did!. If you can test one of your male Sullivan's, Y-DNA gives you the best clue. I have two Sullivan brothers---their Y-DNA identified two other Sullivan men as the ones we are most closely related to and they are quite expert in Sullivan history in County Cork and specifically the Beara Pennisula as well as Massachusetts history of the Sullivans, which is where my Sullivan's migrated to from Ireland. They helpded me considerably on finding my roots!

Another great resouce which one of my Sulivan DNA matches told me about was the Annals of Beara by Riobard O'Dwyer. Its 3 volumes: Contents: v. 1. Adrigole and Allihies parishes -- v. 2. Bere Island and Eyeries parishes -- v. 3. Castletownbere and Glengarriff parishes and A Brief history of the O'Sullivan Clan / by Gary B. Sullivan.

The Annals of Beara present a challenge---it's not indexed, so you have to know your Sullivan parish to find them. NEHGS (New England Historical Society) in Boston, MA is creating an index and you can search on their website.

I would suggest looking at my John O'Sullivan and Catherine Keane on my Ancestry tree. They are my great grandparents. My grandmother, Mary Gladys (O'Sullivan) Bertrand left me a handwritten genealogy that I only have a grainy copy of but I believe she and her father, James (1856 Knocknagashel, Kerry, Ireland and wife Ellen Hanrahan (1858-1933). I have noticed that many of the 11 children John and Catherine had - (useing the naming patterns mentioned above)- moved to Cork as Knocknagashel is in far eastern Kerry and many ancestors moved on to Cork. I hope that helps. I don't have an O'Sullivan Y male to help me as I am thru the maternal line. Carol (O'Donnell) Cox

PS - my brothers (O'Donnell) appear to be on Viking descendant from southeast Ireland to having arrived by Norweigen Vikings in the 8th century!!!
