Hi!  One of my Power (Powers) family married a Shea in the mid 1800's probably after they had both immigrated to Frostburg, Maryland, from Ireland.  I know the Powers are from Broughal.  I wanted to know if the Powers already knew the Sheas in Ireland.  The families were very close after they settled in Frostburg.

Catherine Powers (1832-1917) married Michael Shea (1829-1907).

Catherine Powers as the daughter of James Powers (1808-1880) and Anne Killeen (1806-1866).

Most of James' and Anne's children were born in the parish, these are their baptism dates (I have the images):  Catherine (4/23/1831), Thomas (8/22/1833), Margaret (10/6/1834), Maryann (3/12/1837), John (/22/1839), Ellen (3/6/1842), James (6/13/1844), Ann (7/8/1846).  Two more children were born after they got to America:  Elizabeth (1849) and Francis (1853).

The Tithe Applotment book shows a Thomas Power in 1826 in townland Castlewood, parish Ballyboy.  Griffiths Valuation shows no Thomas but a Richard Power and a Patrick Power in Broughal.  I know that it is the same place because the landlord is the same (Nicholas Fitzsimon).

I think that Thomas Power (possibly 1779-1844) was James' father but I don't know how to confirm it.  James' first son was named Thomas.  Neither Thomas was on the ship to America in 1847.  The older Thomas had probably died.  I wish I knew what happened to the younger Thomas.  I wonder if Richard Power and Patrick Power were James' brothers.

My other question is whether there were any Sheas in the area that might have known my Powers family!

  • Hi Marianne, the name Thomas Power struck a chord with me. You wondered what happened to the younger Thomas as he didn't go to America.  There may, or may not be a connection to my gt-grandfather Thomas Power.  My paternal grandmother, Mary Helen Power, married Francis William Brophy in Liverpool, UK, on 13 December 1914.  Mary's father, on their marriage certificate,  was Thomas Power, Dock Labourer.  Mary was 22yrs at the time of her marriage so her father, Thomas, could have been born early 1890s or late 1790s. If your Thomas didn't go to America perhaps he went to Liverpool. Sorry  I can't help with anything else as I am researching my mother's side of the family and don't know anything about the Power family.   Regards Marg

  • Hi Marg, that's interesting!  The ship that took most of the family to America sailed from Liverpool.  Mary's father would have been born early 1890's or late 1880's, I think you meant.  Both of my Thomas' were born before that, but your Thomas might have been a descedant.  Thanks, Marg!
