I'm trying to find out more about my 2x great grandfather Patrick McGee. Patrick was b. 1815 ish and is the father of John McGee b approx 1841. John McGee married Catherine Friel in the Raphoe Parish. The marriage record shows differently in ancestry, family search, and Roots ireland websites. He has been one of my brick walls so I am going back to what we know which isn't much.

This information is the same in both places (with the exception of the incorrect spelling of Friel).

John McGee, father is Patrick McGee

Catherine Freil (Friel), father is James Freil (Friel)

Date: 9 May 1867

John and Catherine named their first son Patrick after his father, then Peter, John, James after Catherine's father and Hugh. James was Catherine's father and of course, John and Catherine lived in Termon where she was we think born and raised.

Family search indicates the marriage place is Taughboyne, Strabane, County Tyrone

Roots Ireland identifies Raphoe as the parish and their address as Cloughfin.

Thank you,

  • I've been doing more research on my 2x great grandfather Patrick McGee. I found a Patrick Magee in the 1851 Donegal census and his mailing address is

Revd Wm Jno Latimer, The Manse Carnowen, Raphoe, Co Donegal. Below Patrick's name are John, John and Catherine. I

think one John could be my great grandfather and the other could be Patrick's father.

Patrick Magee in 1857 Griffiths Valuation is listed as living in Raphoe Townparks.

My great grandfather was John and I've had a DNA connection to a Kate (Catherine) whose passage to Australia was paid for by the Catholic Church in 1859.

My great grandfather John McGee and my great grandmother Catherine Friel were married in Raphoe parish, and Patrick's address was listed as Taughboyne.

I don't know if this could be my family or if I'm just pulling the wrong thread.
