Laurence was born in Knockclonagad, Garryhill, County Carlow. His family's church was St. Laserian's Church in the parish of Myshall in County Carlow.
He married Margaret Foley 11 Nov 1856 in Horeswood, County Wicklow.
His father was Thomas McDonald who died 12 Jul 1845, and his mother was Brigid Power who died 4 May 1826. His brother David McDonald died 26 Nov 1884 and his sister Ismy died 12 Jul 1857. They are all buried at St. Laserian's Church.
He was a land steward. He lived with Margaret and their 13 children in Chilcomb Lodge, Kilkenny.
Several of his children emigrated to the USA before he died. His wife and the rest of the family moved to Liverpool, England before emigrating to Chicago, Illinois, USA after he died.
