From his obituary published 23 March, 1906 in the Montello (Marquette County, Wisconsin, USA) Express
P. McDonough
Mr. McDonough was born in Strokestown, County Roscommon, Ireland, 86 years ago. There were 12 brothers and three sisters in the family. When a young man he traveled extensively, making a tour of all Europe, and was in London at the coronation of Queen Victoria. He received a good education in Ireland and became a surveyor and civil engineer, following that profession some years. He came to the United States in 1847 and for three years was foreman in the coal mines of Pennsylvania, after which he came to Montello in 1850, when there were only two little log shacks in what is now the village and the great number of inhabitants were Indians. He selected land in the town of Shields and cleared it for a farm on which he lived for 42 years, removing to this village eight years ago. He was married to Miss Mary Maloney and had he lived until the last day of March they would have celebrated their golden wedding. To this union three sons and two daughters were born, all of whom but one survive him.
The funeral was held Thursday morning from St. John's Catholic church of which he was a life long member, Rev. Schwinn officiating.
