  • Hello,

You didn’t mention Patrick J. Lally’s date of birth or the names of his parents, but there is a baptism record in the Roscommon and Kilteevan Catholic Parish showing that a Patricius Joseph Lally was born on 21 January 1876 and baptized on 27 January 1876. His parents are Michael Lally and Brigida Kennedy. The baptism record was found at the National Library of Ireland website link at:
    https://registers.nli.ie//registers/vtls000633982#page/93/mode/1up

Patrick’s baptism is the last entry in the register which spans two facing pages.
The left-hand page records his name, date of birth, and names of his parents. To the right of the parent’s names is the townland where the family was living at the time of the baptism. This townland is called Acres, in County Roscommon.

The right-hand page of the register gives Patrick’s date of birth, the name of the priest who baptized him, and the names of Patrick’s godparents. The name of the priest looks like A. Mulleedy, or A. Mulludy, but it is difficult to tell for certain because of the handwriting. The godparents are Patricius Kennedy and Anna Kennedy. As you can see first names in a Catholic baptism are often in the Latin.

You can enlarge the register by means of round icons in the upper center/ right of the screen. The icons are white with green backgrounds. You can also access the full-screen function by clicking on the last icon on the right with the two arrows pointing northeast and southwest.

Based on the baptism record I also found Patrick’s civil registration birth record at the free irishgenealogy.ie website. The birth record differs from the baptism record. Whereas the baptism record shows that Patrick was born on 21 January 1876, the birth record gives his date of birth as 28 January 1876. The baptism record may be the more accurate of the two. But, the birth record agrees with the baptism record showing that Patrick was born in Acres, Roscommon, and also shows that his parents are Michael Lally and Bridget Lally, formerly Kennedy.

Patrick’s father Michael is shown to be a “Farmer” living in Acres. He reported the birth to the registrar, whose name looks like Joseph Heily, M.D. The registrar recorded Patrick’s birth in the Roscommon Registration District on what looks like 7 February 1876. Joseph’s birth is the first entry in the register at number 330: https://tinyurl.com/3tjtdzx2

I also found the civil registration marriage record for Patrick’s parents, Michael Lally and Bridget Kennedy, who were married in the Roman Catholic Chapel of Killinvoy, County Roscommon, on 13 February 1873. At the time of marriage Michael was a 23 year old “Bachelor” and Bridget a 19 year old “Spinster.” Michael’s occupation is ‘Farmer.” No occupation is recorded for Bridget.

Michael’s residence at the time of marriage is Acres. His father is Edward Lally, a “Farmer.”

Bridget’s residence at the time of marriage is Ballinlig. Her father is Thomas Kennedy, a “Farmer.” The priest who married Michael and Bridget was P.H. Kelly.

The name of one of the witnesses to the marriage is Dan Lally. There appears to be two other witnesses, but one looks like it may be crossed through. The other witness is Anne Igo. You can access the marriage record at the irishgenenalogy.ie website after following the prompts at: https://tinyurl.com/59f2xmpt

I then found the Killinvoy Catholic Parish marriage for Michael and Bridget, which is the first marriage entry spanning both pages of the register at: https://registers.nli.ie//registers/vtls000633977#page/17/mode/1up

Next I located 54 year old Michael Lally, his 40 year old wife Bridget, and four of their children in the 1901 census, which shows the family are the “Residents of a house 1 in Acres (Roscommon, Roscommon).

Michael is shown to be a Farmer who can read and write and speak English only, meaning he did not speak the Irish language. Bridget is a “Seamster,” that is, a seamstress, who can read and write and speak English. The oldest child in the household is 24 year old Domestic Servant, Patrick. he is followed by 23 year old General servant, Thomas. After Thomas is 20 year old Dress Maker Anne, followed by 17 year old House Maid, Delia. All in the household are Catholic and were born in County Roscommon.

The 1901 census transcription at the following link comes from the National Archives of Ireland: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Roscommon/Roscommon/Ac…

Once the census transcription downloads, make sure you tick the box, “Show all information” to view the full census from left to right.

For a copy of the original 1901 census of the Lally family, go to: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai003854396/

If you scroll down to the bottom right corner of the census you’ll see Michael Lally’s signature as the “Head of Family.”

In the 1911 census I located 66 year old Michael Lally, his 55 year old wife Bridget, and their 23 year old daughter Delia. Also in the household is Michael and Bridget’s granddaughter, 8 year old Margaret Walsh. Patrick is not in the household with his parents. The 1911 census shows they are the “Residents of a house 1 in Acres (Roscommon Rural, Roscommon).” See: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Roscommon/Roscommon_Ru…

After you tick the box, “Show all information,” you’ll see that Michael and Bridget had been married for 37 years, and in that time had 7 children, with 5 children still living.

Margaret Walsh would be the daughter of one of Michael and Bridget’s daughters who would have married a fellow with the surname Walsh. This daughter is probably Anne Lally, who was 20 years old in the 1901 census.

For a copy of the original 1911 census of the Lally household, see: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai003230360/

I next looked for Michael and Bridget Lally’s son Patrick in the 1911 census, but couldn’t identify him in any of the census returns for County Roscommon, or any of the nearby counties.

I also could not identify with any certainty, Patrick Lally in any death records or marriage records. It’s possible his death was not reported to the registrar after he died.

I also looked for him in immigration and naturalization records, including ships’ passenger lists for America and England, as well as in census returns for America and Britain, but without results.

Going back to the 1911 census for the Lally family in Acres, Roscommon, Michael and Bridget’s granddaughter is shown to be 8 year old Margaret Walsh. I suspected that she was the daughter of Anne Lally, who was Michael and Bridget’s daughter.

I looked for Margaret’s birth record at the irishgenealogy.ie website and found it. Margaret Mary Walsh was born in Creeveyquinn, Roscommon, on 17 December 1903. Her father is Michael Walsh, a Labourer residing in Creeveyquinn. Her mother is Annie Walsh, formerly Lally. Annie reported the birth of her daughter to the registrar, Joseph McDonnell, who recorded Margaret’s birth in the Roscommon Registration District on 4 July 1904. Margaret Mary’s birth is the second entry in the register at number 159: https://tinyurl.com/3p7ss2tr

The 1911 census also shows that Michael and Bridget Lally had 7 children, with 5 children still alive as of 1911. From his birth and baptism records we know that Patrick Joseph Lally was born in 1876. The civil and church marriage record for his parents show they were married on 13 February 1873. This means that Michael and Bridget Lally could have had one and possibly two children before Patrick was born in 1876.

I looked for the civil registration birth records for 6 of the other children at the irishgenealogy.ie website, and their Roscommon and Kilteevan Catholic Parish baptism records at the National Library of Ireland website.

The National Library of Ireland site shows that the Kilteevan and Roscommon Parish baptisms begin on 1 October 1837, and are available until 9 January 1881. This means any children born after 9 January 1881 will not have baptism records. The National Library of Ireland website also shows the Kilteevan and Roscommon marriages are available from 10 January 1820 to 27 August 1864. Go to the National Library of Ireland website link to see the availability of the Roscommon and Kilteevan parish registers and to also view a map of the parish and surrounding Catholic parishes: https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0564

    LALLY BIRTH RECORDS

Along with Patrick Joseph Lally, I found copies of the original birth records for Edward Lally, Thomas Lally, and Bridget Lally at the irishgenealogy.ie website.

    BIRTH OF EDWARD LALLY

Edward Lally was born in Acres, Roscommon on 8 February 1874. His father is Michael Lally, a Farmer living in Acres. His mother is Bridget Lally, formerly Kennedy. Michael, the father, reported the birth to the registrar, whose name looks like Joseph Heely, M.D. Joseph Heely recorded the birth in the Roscommon Registration District om 9 February 1874. Edward’s birth is number 171 in the register at: https://tinyurl.com/2p97ptjd

    BIRTH OF PATRICK LALLY

    In 1876 as noted earlier.

    BIIRTH OF THOMAS LALLY

Thomas Lally was born in Acres, Roscommon on 8 April 1877. His father is Michael Lally, a Farmer living in Acres. His mother is Bridget Lally, formerly Kennedy. Michael, the father reported the birth to the registrar, Joseph Heely, M.D., who recorded Thomas’s birth in the Roscommon Registration District on 20 April 1877. Thomas’s birth is number 67 in the register: https://tinyurl.com/mw3zpjp3

    BIRTH OF BRIDGET LALLY

Bridget was born in Acres, Roscommon on 1 February 1882. Her father is Michael Lally, a Farmer living in Acres. Her mother is Bridget Lally, formerly Kennedy. Michael, the father, reported the birth to the registrar, Joseph Heely, M.D., who recorded the birth in the Roscommon Registration District on 1 Mary 1882. Bridget’s birth is the second entry up from the bottom of the register: https://tinyurl.com/yjc86p89

    LALLY BAPTISM RECORDS

Roscommon and Kilteevan Catholic Parish baptism records for six children of Michael Lally and Bridget Kenned were located at the free National Library of Ireland website. There isn’t a baptism record for Bridget Lally who was born in 1882, as the National Library of Ireland’s Roscommon and Kilteevan Catholic Parish baptisms are only available until 9 January 1881, as mentioned earlier in this reply.

In four of the baptism records first names of the children are in the Latin form as you will see coming up. Also, baptisms span two pages of the register. The left-hand page records the name of the child, date of birth, names of the parents, and residence of the parents and child. The right-hand page records the date of the baptism, the name of the priest who baptized the child, and the child’s sponsors, or godparents.

    BAPTISM OF EDWARDUS LALLY

Edwardus Lally was baptized on 15 February 1874. His baptism record also gives his birthdate as 10 February 1874, whereas his civil registration birth record gives his date of birth as 8 February 1874. His baptism is the 5th entry up from the bottom of the register at number 686: https://registers.nli.ie//registers/vtls000633982#page/78/mode/1up

The residence of the family on the left-hand page looks like it is spelled, “Akers,” for the townland of Acres. The right-hand register page, in addition to the baptism date, shows the priest who baptized Edwardus was P. O’Brien. The names of the godparents are Michael Kennedy and Ann Lally. Michael Kennedy was probably Bridget Kennedy Lally’s brother, and Ann Lally, Michael Lally’s sister.

    BAPTISM OF CATHERINA LALLY

Catherina Lally’s baptism record shows she was born as, well as baptized, on 13 March 1875. The residence of her family is Acres. The name of the priest who baptized her looks like it could be D. Mulleedy. Her godparents are Thomas Kennedy and Catherina Nolan. The baptism is the 2nd entry up from the bottom of the register, number 792 at: https://registers.nli.ie//registers/vtls000633982#page/86/mode/1up

    BAPTISM OF PATRICIUS JOSEPH LALLY

His birth and baptism were noted earlier in this reply. If you recall, he was living in Acres with his parents at the time of the baptism. His godparents were Patricius Kennedy and Anna Kennedy.

    BAPTISM OF THOMAS EDVARDUS LALLY

Thomas Edvardus Lally was born on 8 April 1877. He and his parents were living in Acres at the time of the baptism, which took place on 15 April 1877. The priest who baptized him looks like Joanne Pyne. Joanne is the Latin for John. Thomas’s godparents are Patrick Lally and Catherina Nolan. His baptism record is the 4th entry down from the top of the baptism register at number 233, which you can access at: https://registers.nli.ie//registers/vtls000633982#page/103/mode/1up

    BAPTISM OF MARY JOANNA LALLY

Mary Joanna Lally was born on 2 September 1878 and baptized on 6 October 1878. At the time of the baptism she and her parents were living in Acres. The name of the priest who baptized Mary Joanna was H.F. Gately. Her godparents are Joannis Kennedy and Catherine Kennedy. Joannis is a Latin variant spelling for the name John. The baptism record is the 4th entry up from the bottom of the register: https://registers.nli.ie//registers/vtls000633982#page/117/mode/1up

    BAPTISM OF ANNA LALLY

Anna Lally was born on 20 March 1880 and baptized on 28 March 1880. She and her parents were living in Acres at the time of the baptism. The priest who baptized Anna was M. Callery. Her godparents are Michael Kennedy and Hanna Fox. Anna’s baptism is the 4th entry down from the top of the register page at: https://registers.nli.ie//registers/vtls000633982#page/130/mode/1up

Below are the names (English version of first names) of Michael Lally and Bridget Kennedy’s seven children. Along with the names and dates for the children, you’ll see if I had found birth and baptism records for them, or just a baptism record, or just a birth record:

Edward Lally, birth and baptism 1874
    Catherine Lally, baptism only, 1875
Patrick Joseph Lally, birth and baptism 1876
Thomas Edward Lally, birth and baptism 1877
Mary Joanna Lally, baptism only, 1878
    Anna Lally, baptism only, 1880
    Bridget Lally, birth only, 1882
    ____

As you can see I didn’t find the civil registration birth records for Catherine Lally in 1875; or for Mary Joanna Lally in 1878; and for Anna Lally in 1880. Their births may not have been reported to the registrar, or it is also possible I missed locating their birth records at the irishgenealogy.ie website.

These birth and baptism records however, confirm the information in the 1911 census that Michael and Bridget Lally had seven children. The 1911 census also shows that of the seven children, five were still alive as of 1911.

I only found the death record for one of Michael and Bridget’s children from the 1875 to 1911 time period..

    EDWARD LALLY’S DEATH RECORD

Edward Lally died in Acres on 18 May 1874 at the age of 4 months. He is shown to have been a “Farmers Son.” The cause of death was, “Croup 2 days. No Medical Attendant.” His father Michael was present at the death and reported the death to the registrar, Joseph Heely, who recorded the death in the Roscommon Registration District on 15 June 1874. Edward’s death is number 131 in the register at: https://tinyurl.com/4tjbpaaj

Edward was Michael and Bridget’s the first-born child, and first-born son.

The one child of Michael and Bridget Lally in the household with them in both the 1911 census as well as the 1901 census is their daughter Delia. In the 1901 census Delia is 17 years old, but in the 1911 census she is 24 yar old, having only aged 7 years in a 10 year period. This shows you cannot always trust the age of a person in either census. The ages of her parents do not add up either between the 1901 and 1911 census either.

In any case, I did not find a birth record or a baptism record for a child of Michael and Bridget’s named Delia. Delia, in some Irish families is the nickname for Bridget. As you saw earlier, Bridget was born on 1 February1882. She would have actually been 19 years old when the census was taken on 31 March 1901, and 29 years old when the 1911 census was taken on 2 April of that year.

Also concerning Delia Lally, I found her marriage record at the irishgenealogy.ie website. She and Luke Hanly were married in the Roman Catholic Chapel of Roscommon on March 3, 1919. Luke’s age is shown to be, “full,” and he is shown to have been a bachelor before marriage. His occupation is “Farmer.” His residence at the time of marriage looks like it could be Portrun, or maybe Portrua, but I can’t tell for sure because of the handwriting. His father is Luke Hanly, a Farmer.

No age is given for Delia. She is shown to be a spinster, meaning that she hadn’t been married before. No occupation is recorded for her either, but her residence at the time of marriage is Acres. Her father is Michael Lally, a farmer. The first and middle initials of the Parish Priest who married Luke and Delia are T.H. I couldn’t decipher his last name. The witnesses to the marriage are Thomas Brennan and Margaret Walsh. Earlier you saw that Margaret Walsh was born in Creeveyquinn, Roscommon, on 17 December 1903, and was in the 1911 census with her grandparents, Michael and Bridget Lally. Her birth record shows that her parents are Michael Walsh and Annie Lally.

Delia and Luke’s marriage was recorded in the Roscommon Registration District on June 19, 1919 by the registrar, Joseph McDonell. See the marriage record at: https://tinyurl.com/5zt4t96k

At the irishgenealogy.ie website I looked for, and found, the death records for Michael and Bridget Lally. Bridget had died first.

    DEATH RECORD FOR BRIDGET LALLY

Bridget died in Acres on 14 July 1917 at the age of 60 years. She was married and a “Farmers Wife” when she died. The cause of death was “Heart Disease duration not known.” Her daughter Delia Lally, of Acres, reported the death to the registrar, Joseph McDonnell, who recorded the death in the Roscommon Registration District on 6 August 1917. Bridget’s death is number 256 in the register: https://tinyurl.com/2fu7wz9r

    DEATH RCORD FOR MICHAEL LALLY

Michael died in Acres on 4 March 1931 at the age of 85. At the time of death he was a “Widower” and a “Farmer.” The cause of death was “old age. His daughter Delia Hanly, of Acres, was present at the death. The assistant registrar, B. Gilbert, recorded Michael’s death in the Roscommon Registration District on 10 April 1931. Michael’s death is the first entry in the register, number 241: https://tinyurl.com/f9uf55e7

DEATH RECORD FOR THOMAS E. LALLY

In further research, I located the death record for Michael and Bridget Lally’s son, Thomas E. Lally. If you recall, he was born in Acres, Roscommon in 1877. The death record comes from the subscription Ancestry.com website, and shows that Thomas died in the Montana State Tuberculosis Sanatorium, Deer Lodge, Montana, on 21 December 1916. At the time of death he was 34 years old. His birthdate is shown to be May 1882, and his birth pace as “Roscommon,” but his birth and baptism records show he was born on 8 April 1877. He would have actually been 39 when he died in 1916. The cause of death was “Pulmonary Tuberculosis.” He was single at the time of death. His parents are recorded as Michael Lally and Bridget Kennedy. His death record also shows he was buried in Butte, Montana, and that the undertakers were Sherman & Reid, of Butte. See the death record transcription below:
