Looking to find information on my Great Grandfather Charles Molloy who farmed and raised his family in Graigue, Mountmellick. He was born about 1815 and died in 1882. He married Ellen Mooney in 1845. My grandfather Laurence was their youngest child and migrated to Australia in 1885.

We have no information on where Charles was born, his siblings or his parents. However, naming conventions, which Charles and Ellen seem to have followed, suggest Charles' father was James Molloy.

owever, we have Ancestry DNA matches to a number of people with Molloy ancestors in their family trees. A number of these point to Rahan and Tullamore in Offaly. Names of these include John Murrough Molloy (b. Rahan 1864) and his father James, grandfather Felix; Francissi Molloy (b 1815); Patrick Molloy (Tullamore, 1859-1917) and James Molloy (b 1837 Rahan).

Appreciate any help. Peter

Thats from a transcription on Find My Past although looking at the Mountmellick register I was unable to find it .

Ellen seems to be living in Graigue on 1901 census with a son (Patrick aged 50 ) and 2 nephews Edward Flanagan and Joseph Langton .

  • In 1851-52, there were four Charles Molloys listed in Griffiths Valuation of Laois; one was in Graigue.

Griffith Molloy Charles Forest Upper Castlebrack Co. Laois
Griffith Molloy Charles Baunaree Clonenagh and Clonagheen Co. Laois
Griffith Molloy Charles Graigue Rosenallis Co. Laois
Griffith Molloy Charles Mountmellick (Forge Lane) Rosenallis Co. Laois

    I hope this is helpful.

Thanks so much agha and Patricia for your rapid response. I realise I should have provided more information in my message, as I have fairly complete information on Charles' and Ellen's children.

The farm you picked out is the correct lod family one. I have uploaded a picture of my mum and the owner, Mrs Scott, taken when my parents visited in 1983. As you said, right on the N80. The home is no longer occupied, so in a state of some disrepair - distant cousin on great grandmother side sent a phote last year.

Thanks for pointing to the Charles Molloy baptism in Rahan in 1816 - more than I had managed to find. However, I think it is probably not my great grandfather. Charles and Ellen's first child was James and second child named Patrick after Ellen's father Patt Mooney; so I expect that Charles father likely James Molloy.

Thans for the help and glad to receive any other pointers.

  • To be honest it was the Graigue bit that caught my eye .My late mother was born and raised in Graigue ,about 500m from Scotts .Have cousins still living there .Have a local history book of Mountmellick here somewhere written by John Joe Dunne from Graigue .Will take a look and see if any mention of Molloys .

  • Thanks agha

That's really interesting. Would be very interested in anything from the local history book.

A Dunne family were at house 14 in the 1901 and 1911 censuses, with the Molloys at house 14. Interestingly, and causing some confusion in a couple of Ancestry family trees, there was an Ellen Dunne Molloy in the Dunne household, with Ellen (Mooney) Molloy being head of the the Molloy household. Our great grandmother Ellen died in 1902, while the oher Ellen Molloy died in 1909. Ellen Dunne had married Bernard Molloy (of Tullamore), a widower, at Rosenallis in 1874. There is a monument to his first wife Mary Molloy in the Mountmellick graveyard. As far is we know there is no direct connection of Bernard Molloy with our family.

    Best wishes, Peter

  • Thanks for the Mountmellick Heritage site tip. Posting a query there. Was the John Joe Dunne book you mentioned "Sparks from the Embers", which I see I can still buy, or another specifcally local one? Seems that John Joe Dunne is quite a local identity - listened to him talking about his share dairy farming.

    Thanks again

Peter - ps. expecting to be visiting Ireland next year to chase up a few things in person.

  • I wonder if these Molloys' are related to my great grandmotherx2 Jane Molloy from Mountmellick who married Daniel Brennan 26 Sep 1867 in Carlow records.

From what I know so far is that she was born in Mountmellick around 1847 to Tim Molloy and Sally Geoghegan. She and Daniel Brennan are recorded has living in Ballickmoyler, Laois where they had 3 children before emigrating to England and settling in Huddersfield in or around 1875. I have no further recorded evidence of their Irish families but plucked names from baptismal and marriage records of witnesses who may or may not have been related, such as Bridget Kennedy, Mary Elizabeth Molloy, Edward Molloy, Julia Molloy, Rose Molloy, Martin Brennan. Their children were Julia Brennan 1870, Patrick 1872 died 1872, Ellen Georgina 1874, Martin Henry 1878 died 1917 in France, Bridget M 1879, Laurence 1882 (my great grandfather), and Daniel 1884.

  • Apologies for delayed reply. I have had search, but can't come up with a possible link. I haven't come across a Tim Molloy, any Geoghegans or Jane Molloy/Brennan. My great grandparents Charles Molloy and Ellen (Mooney) Molloy had eleven children and three names do cross over with your list of Jane's children - Patrick, Ellen and Laurence (my grandfather, born in 1865) as well as a Mary and Edward among baptismal sponsors. But going through the baptismal and marriage records, I can't find connections to Jane or her family (Brennans). The only Molloy who was a sponsor for any of the family was a Mary Molloy for Ellen's baptism in 1861 (possibly Charles sister).

The only other Molloy connection to Mountmellick that I know of, was of a Mary Molloy who died in 1866, aged 70. There is a monument in her memory erected by her husband Bernard Molloy af Tullamore in the Graigue, Mountmellick cemetery. As far as we know, she is not related to our family.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

    Best wishes, Peter Molloy
