Mary O'Toole was baptized February 17, 1842, daughter of John O'Toole and Catherine Gyles. Baptismal records show a brother, Edward (b. 1844) and a sister Catherine (b. 1846). John was a farmer.
Mary emigrated to the United States. She married Patrick McNulty, born in County Mayo, at Cathedral of the Holy Name in Chicago, Illinois on August 16, 1868. Three years later the Cathedral was destroyed in the great fire.
Patrick and Mary moved to a farm in Kansas where children Jerome and Stephen were born. They headed west to homestead near Olympia, Washington Territory. Theresa, Veronica, Katherine, Alphonsus, John, and Cidney were born there.
Mary died six years after her husband Patrick, who served as a Union soldier in the Civil War. He received a disability pension after years of petitions. She applied for a widow's pension, granted in 1905, persevering after an attorney failed.
Mary submitted an affidavit about her homestead property: three-room house and barn (neither shingled or painted), value $550, furnishings $20, livestock $50, taxes $13.20.
