Patrick was born 2 November 1840 in New York. His parents were Michael and Madge Houston. According to family stories they came from Cloghan.
In 1857 Patrick commenced his teaching career in Letterbrick. He attended the Dublin Training Establishment in 1858-1859 and then continued to teach from 1860-1873 at various schools in Ireland.
In 1875 he immigrated to Queensland, Australia and taught in various country schools until he retired in 1904.
He married Julia Mary Dynan in Mackay, Queensland on 4 January 1880. They had 6 children.
Patrick died 15 May 1916 and is buried in the Bundaberg Cemetery.
