Joseph Daly (1807 - 1875) was my great-great grandfather He was possibly born in County Cork and died in Canada. His parents were John Daly (1768 - Galway - 1820 - Cork) and Nora Cotter (1780 - 1848), born and died in County Cork.  Joseph left Ireland in 1840 along with his wife Eliza (Elizabeth) Dempsey (1807 - King, Offaly - 1893 - Canada) and two daughters, Sally and Elizabeth. Joseph was a weaver and carried the sticks that made up his loom with his family's possessions. They left from Kilkenny, along with (possibly) one of Joseph's brothers, Daniel (1809 - 1873), bound for the USA.

Joseph and Daniel's ship was hit with an illness, and they were all offloaded at Grosse Isle, a quarantine station near Quebec City in Canada. Daniel stayed in this vicinity (Coaticook QC) while Joseph and his family eventually made their way to a small Irish enclave called Farrellton in the Gatineau Hills of Quebec.

Three other brothers, John (1802 - 1875), Thomas (1810 - 1896) and Cornelius (1815 - 1896) all immigrated to the USA later (about 1850), and died in Connecticut, New York and Indiana, respectively.

Their only sister, Mary (1819 - about 1846) died in Ireland.  Mary and her husband, Patrick Blake (1816 - 1858) had at least two children. A daughter, Mary Elizabeth (1833 - 1922) married Charles Whittington (1819 - 1895) and settled in New South Wales, Australia, where their descendants still live. Mary and Patrick Blake's son Patrick, (1836 - 1918) remained in Ireland. Patrick married Mary Whelan (1839 - 1914) on 22 January 1871 in Kilrush, County Clare, Ireland. They had at least eight children.

The youngest of Joseph's brothers, Patrick (1817 - 1892) stayed in Ireland, and we have no knowledge of whether he married or had children.

My husband and I plan a trip to Ireland in the fall of 2023 and would love to learn whether any of the descendants of my great-great- grandfather's siblings, Mary and Patrick might still be in Ireland.

  • Hi

The information about your ancestors is very interesting. To find out more while visiting Ireland you might try and organise a Meet and Greet with one of our local volunteers. This is a free service.
