James Barnes Cochran, Merchant of Belfast, was born circa 1806, possibly in Co. Armagh, as his will refers to land in the townlands of Ballyards and Moneyquin in that county. He married Frances Greer, daughter of Thomas Greer, 7 December 1833, St Ann (COI), Belfast.
James and Frances had Julia (1836), Anne (1840), Hessie (1841), John (1844), Margaret (1848) and James W. (1851)
He was a wine merchant in Belfast for several decades, and was elected in 1858 as Councillor (Conservative) for Smithfield Ward, Borough of Belfast, succeeding Andrew Kirk; he held this office at the time of his death, and was succeeded by John Rea.
The Cochran family were members of the Church of Ireland, although a number of descendants in the USA would affiliate with the Roman Catholic Church.
