Searching for Matthew McEvoy born near Cappinrush/Mountfead or Mountmellick area in early 1800s. He married Catherine Walsh (born1815) from the same area in 1845 in New York. Both emigrated in1840. Strong DNA match to William McEvoy born 1833, son of William. Resided in Brockera or Brockra.

  • The civil parish of Clonenagh and Clonagheen is quite large and there are three different RC parishes which cover the area of the civil parish. Unfortunately, baptismal records for all three parishes start 1819 or later: Ballyfin 1824 Mountrath 1823 Raheen 1819. Based on your note, it appears that Matthew McEvoy was born before 1819.

I searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland in all three parishes for a William McEvoy baptismal record with father William and the only record I found was in Mountrath RC parish October 1 1824 father William mother Elizabeth Conners.   I assume this record is not correct since it is not 1833?

  • I very much appreciate your looking and I find it quite interesting for it fits except for the year. Are the Mountrath RC parish records available on line ? I would like to have a look. And could there be old church records for Hollow church, from the Mountrath/Ballyfin Parishes. I was told that McEvoys attend there. Thank you ever so much

  • Matthew and Catherine are my Great, great Grandparents. They settled in Eden, (Ashford Township) Fond du lac county, Wisconsin. They are buried there in St James cemetery.

  • I believe I’ve found my gg grandmother Catherine Walsh in the Mountmellick RC baptism records dated 6 April 1815. It is difficult to read but I think it shows her father as Tom Walsh and sponsors as Tom Conroy and Mary Doolin. It does not report her mother as some other baptismal record have. Can you share any more information on this very important piece of my family heritage?  I’ve just started searching those records and I hope to find more. Thank you !

  • I just returned from Ireland last night and catching up on all the questions which have accumulated. It appears that the the Mountmellick priest in 1815 was not recording the name of the mother on baptismal records. I don't know how long this went on since normally the mother's maiden name was recorded.

I don't think the father's name was Tom. Roots Ireland transcribed the name as James and if you look at the record two above from Catherine Walsh, it does appear to be James. I have the sponsors as John (shown as Jno)  Conroy and Mary Devlin.

  • Thank you for correcting me Roger. I very much need such accuracy. I’ll continue searching for Matthew McEvoy for I have found almost nothing about him. I’m also looking for Mary Ann Corcoran as I’ve been told this is Matthew McEvoys’ mother. She died in 1869 and that is all I know about her. I greatly appreciate all you do for all of us.
