This John Clark (perhaps originally Clarke) is my ggg-grandfather.
He first shows up in the US on the 1850 Census in the village of Sherborn, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.
All 3 of John's known children were born in Ireland: Mary A (b ~1830), Patrick (b ~ 1836), and Alice (b ~ 1839). Both Mary and Alice consistently claimed birth in County Monaghan; we're still looking for something definitive regarding Patrick's birthplace, and we also believe John himself was born in or near County Monaghan.
Unfortunately, John just seems to "vanish", after subsequently showing on the 1855 Massachusetts State and 1860 US Census, still in Sherborn (he's living with his younger daughter Mary A Clark Newell's family in 1860).
All 3 of John's children showed their parents as John Clark and Alice Kell(e)y on marriage and death records in Massachusetts.
John seems to have arrived in the US approximately the same time as his brother James, who also settled with his much larger family in Sherborn. (I'll create a separate post for James).
