Martin Baggott was born in 1831 near Ballymoe, Kilcroan, Co. Galway. His parents were Henry and Catherine Baggott, who were living in Treanboy, Kilcroan in 1836. Martin's siblings include: Michael (b. 1833), James (b. 1842, d. 1905), Thomas (b. 1844, d. 1859), and Henry Jr. (b. 1849, d. 1849). About 1848-9, Henry, Catherine, and their children emigrated to Islington, London where Henry worked as a bricklayer. The son Henry Jr. was born in Islington and lived only 2 months. Henry died in 1867 and his wife Catherine in 1862.
In 1853, Martin married a cousin, Julia Baggott, daughter of John Baggott, also born in Co. Galway, possibly Ussey, Ballynakill. John and his children had emigrated to England as well. Martin and Julia's children were: Henry (1854-1929), Catherine (1857-1939), John (1860-1861), Laura (1864-1881), Julia (1867-1915), Mary Ann (1869-1919), and Thomas (1872-1890). Martin worked as a plasterer, and died in 1889 while Julia died in 1907.
In London, the family surname later came to be spelled as Bagot.
Descendants of Martin and Julia are DNA matches to the Baggots from Cloonreliagh, Ballinlough, Co. Roscommon (which is 10 km from Ballymoe, Co. Galway) but the exact family relationship between Martin's father Henry and/or Catherine's father John to the Cloonreliagh Baggots is not known.
