Andy O’Sullivan was born on 14th May 1882, the son of Michael O’Sullivan and Mary O’Sullivan née Smith and grew-up on the O’Sullivan's twenty-acre farm at Denbawn. In the War of Independence, Andy served as an intelligence officer and during the Civil War he was a staunch republican who made the ultimate sacrifice for his beliefs. He died on 23rd November 1923 while on hunger strike for 40 days.
He was buried in Saint Gobnaits Cemetery, Goulds Hill, Mallow, Cork on 27 November 1923; his funeral cortège was reported to be a mile in length.
O'Sullivan's name is commemorated on a statue that stands outside Cavan Courthouse.
