James was the 2nd youngest male of the Connaughton family who lived in Cullenagower area of County Westmeath. James migrated to the New York City (Ellis Island) area somewhere around 1890 in search of a better life. James had a younger brother Patrick who never left Ireland up until his death in 1961. James joined the US Army upon achieving citizenship. He died at the US Army hospital on Governor's Island, New York in 1954.
