I’m trying to find out what happened to my Ancestors, namely my 3rd Great Aunt. Her name was Bridget McGarry. I have records showing that she was born on the 3rd September, 1821 in Croghan, Roscommon. Her parents were Peter McGarry and Mary Lowe. She married Thomas Doonokin on the 11th Feb, 1839 in Croghan, Roscommon and they had 2 children that I know of- John Doonokin b 1839, and Thomas Doonokin b1842. 
Her sister, Margaret McGarry b 1826, my 3rd Great Grandmother was part of the Earl Grey’s famine orphan scheme, and arrived in Australia in 1849. I’ve found her mother and her brother living in England in 1851, but can’t find any further information on Thomas and Bridget Doonokin and their children. 
After  reading the information about the Irish Famine Evictions, I thought finding the name of their landlord might be a good start but I have no idea how to find his name. I would appreciate any information that could assist me in my quest to find out what happened to them. I feel very connected to them for some reason.

  • Croghan is a small village in North Roscommon. It is situated about 6 miles from the town of Boyle . Carrick on Shannon, is a town in county Leitrim, ~ croghan is also about 6 miles from Carrick on Shannon.

    The landlord in the Croghan area was named Lloyd.  Croghan house in which the Lloyds lived is no longer in existence.

    For information on the Landlord named Lloyd, have you looked up " The Landed Estates of County Roscommon".

  • The name Croghan, comprises in excess of forty townlands. It would be very helpful if you had the name of the townland from where your ancestors came. The name Doonikan has died out round the Croghan area. There were Doonikans in Killukin, and in Tartan, both these places are a few miles from Croghan Village. some years ago, the genealogical service, which is located in Strokestown House, County Roscommon, transcribed the Parish Registers.. 

    If you contact the service at Strokestown House, staff there may be able to assist you.
