Julia's parents were Cornelius Murphy and Mary Haly who were married March 25, 1851 in Kilmichael, Cork, Ireland.
Julia came to the United States in 1870 when she was 16 and went to Bangor, ME where she lived with her father's sister. (name unknown). She traveled with her brother John, who died at a young age in Bangor, ME. Julia then moved to Boston. She had a maternal uncle, Patrick Haley, who lived in Malden, Massachusetts.
Julia's sister, Katherine, married Pat O'Donahue and her other sister, Elizabeth, married Timothy Kelly.
