Jane Montgomery was born on November 15, 1858, to Margaret Isabella Niblock, age 37, and James Montgomery, age 38 in the townland of Tullygaghny, Parish of Clontibret, County Monaghan. She had two sisters, Annie and Isabella (Bella), and a brother Robert, that we know of. Jane married Joseph Stewart, a resident of Cornawall townland in Parish of Aghabog, Co. Monaghan, on December 28, 1876 at the McKelvey's Grove Presbyterian Church. At the time of her marriage her residence was listed as the townland of Tullycaghney.  The following year their first son, Thomas James, was born on  April 4, 1877. They left shortly afterwards on the steamship Circassisan to arrive in Canada on May 27, 1877 in Quebec. From there they travelled upriver to Dickinson's Landing in Ontario, where they disembarked and travelled overland to the community of Cannamore, where they eventually settled. They had a family of 8 children.
