BIRTH

John Higgins was born about 1796, according to his record of death. Due to his residence at marriage, (Mary) bourgh (West) and his choice of residence after marriage, he was probably born in Colt Townland in Clonenagh and Clonegheen Civil Parish in Raheen Catholic Parish in Queen's County, Ireland (which was renamed County Laois in 1922).

MARRIAGE

John Higgins married Anne Grant in Raheen Townland in 1833. (Raheen and Colt share a border a little north of the Town of Abbeyleix.) The event was recorded in Roman Catholic parish records in the Diocese Kildare and Leighlin. They had a son named Thomas in 1832. They had a daughter named Eliza in 1846. They may also have had sons Denis, in 1830, and Jeremiah, in 1837. John and his family lived in Colt Townland. He was a Farmer.

DEATH

He died in on March 27, 1882 in Colt Townland, where he owned a house and leased six acres of land in the Clonenagh and Clonegheen Civil Parish in Raheen Catholic Parish, Queen's County, Ireland.

BURIAL

A John Higgins, address Kilrony (probably actually Kilrory Townland), buried two sons in Curraclone Graveyard, Stone 4, in Queen's County (which was renamed County Laois in 1922). The transcriber's procedure was to name the Higginses' (for example) stones in the graveyard consecutively. As of 1837 Raheen Townland of Maryborough West Barony was in Clonenagh and Clonegheen Civil Parish whereas Raheen Townland of Stradbally Barony was in Curraclone Civil Parish. Since Colt was next to Raheen and since part of Raheen Townland (and likely also Colt Townland) was associated with the Curraclone Civil Parish, then this John Higgins could have erected a gravestone for his family at Curraclone Graveyard (a little to the east of Colt Townland). The Roman Catholic affiliation of the Curraclone Cemetery makes the graveyard a likely place for the gravesite of the entire Higgins Family.
