Joseph was born in May ~1854 in Co. Monaghan, Ireland. On December 28, 1876 he married Jane Montgomery in McKelvey' Grove Meeting House in the Parish of Muckno in Co. Monaghan. At that time he was residing in Cornawall, Parish of Aghabog.
His father was James Stewart, a farmer. Jane Montgomery was a minor living in Tullycaghney, Parish of Muckno, Co. Monaghan. Her father was James Montgomery, a farmer. The Marriage licence was witnessed by Isabella Montgomery (Jane's mother, nee Niblock) and Robert Montgomery,
Joseph and Jane emigrated to Canada on the Circassian, out of Londonderry with their young son, Thomas J. Stewart, arriving in Quebec on May 27, 1877. They settled in Cannamore, County of Dundas, Ontario.
