Julia Frances Delaney was born in Borris in Ossory, Co Laois and emigrated to England on an unknown date. Family lore has it that she was engaged to a wealthy businessman and was sent to the seaside to recuperate from a health issue regarding her lungs. There she met and fell in love with Solomen Merkel. They wished to marry but as she was an Irish Catholic and he a Lithuanian Jew both families objected, so they eloped and were married in Hastings registery office. They had 3 children born in London and made the decision to emigrate to Australia in 1922. Julia arrived with her 3 children on the Euripides on 13th March 1922. Their youngest son was born in Australia.
