Samuel Stewart was the son of Samuel Stewart  and Sarah Elizabeth Brown.

His grandfather was John Stewart.

His entire working life was spent as a driller, and later a foreman, at Harland and Wolff; working there from around 1921 until 1969.

He was the foreman in charge of the construction of the Goliath Crane at the shipyards. He died from lung cancer in 1972, probably as a direct result to asbestos exposure while working at the yard.
